Not sure that I agree. I think Bruce Sterling wants to be the “country gentleman” of his mind, not reality. Who wants to have shallow relationships, especially masquerading as deep ones? There are stories upon stories about the aristocracy (which is what Bruce Sterling, whether he realizies it or not, is talking about) and the restraints upon real relationships that existed within its confines. Perhaps Mr. Sterling really just wants a Sabbath: Rediscovering Sabbath Rest | What? Me, Unplug?
