Your last statement in particular caught my eye. The kids and I have been listening (again) to the Chronicles of Narnia, and we just recently heard the part where Susan asks Mrs. Beaver if Aslan is "safe" and Lucy reiterates the query. They wanted him to be safe for their side (though he was quite obviously not going to be safe for the witch queen). Mr. Beaver replies, "‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”

It seems that statement ought to be made about Jesus. And when people ask if Rev./Dr. King's views line up with their own, a similar statement could be made. 'Course they don't line up exactly with what you'd like. But he's a child of God, and in the end that's all that really matters. Whether or not his statements were perfect, whether or not he held the same beliefs as anyone else, the whole point was that he wanted people to realize they are all on the same footing when it comes to standing before God. Tweaking Rev./Dr. King's views so they seem to match your own will not put you on a better ground when you stand before God.
